Linwood Dyer Collection – Part 024
By Don Taylor

For Photo Friday, I identified the people in five photos from the Linwood Dyer Collection this week. This collection includes hundreds of photos, documents, and genealogies of people who lived in Scarborough, Portland, and Cape Elizabeth, Westbrook, Maine. I like analyzing the images and trying to reunite the photos with family members who may have never seen the picture. The Scarborough Historical Society holds the originals in the Linwood Dyer Photo Collection.

Bernes O Norton, circa 1905.

Photo of a man, Burnes O Norton.
Bernes O Norton, circa 1905.

The photo identifying information includes:

  • Photographer: Hanson Studio, 12 Monument Square, Portland, Maine
  • Handwritten on the back: Burnes O. Norton, Belfast, Maine.

What I learned while researching this photo:

  • The 1900 US Census on Ancestry lists B?es O Norton (Ala Burnes Norton, aka Berness “Berne” O Norton). He is 33 years old, married to Ellen Norton, and has a son, Charles B Norton. His parents are Samuel G. and Anna S Norton.
  • Ancestry Trees appear to be consistent with his name, Bernes O Norton.

I am confident this is Bernes O Norton, born on 22 August 1867 and died in 1933. He appears to be in his late 30s, dating the photo to about 1905.

I added this photo to my Linwood Dyer Collection family tree at Ancestry.

Doris Ione (Dain), [Dyer], Nisbet, circa 1991.
  • Handwritten on the back: Doris Nisbet, just before her last illness.

  • Doris Ione Nisbet is Linwood Dyer’s mother. She married Howard Osgood Dyer in 1921, had Linwood in 1925, and married Lewis Dexter Nisbet in 1937. She died on 23 March 1991.

This photo is circa 1991.

Photo of a young woman.
Emily A Rood, March 1899.

What I learned while researching this photo:

  • A search of the 1900 US Census results in 10 Emily Roods. I am ignoring all whose middle initial is not “A,” leaving three.
    • Emily Rood, Age 22, was born in 1877 in Canada. In 1900, she lived in Saint Clair, Michigan with her husband, Reuben Rood.
    • Emily Rood, Age 28, was born in 1871 in England. In 1900, she lived in Syracuse, New York, with her husband, William Rood.
    • Emily Rood, age 67, was born Jul 1832 in Massachusetts. In 1900, the widow lived in Wallingford, CT, with her brother-in-law.

I could not identify the individual, so I uploaded this photo of Emily to Dead Fred.
