This week, for Photo Friday, I identify the people in five more envelopes from the Ethel Wight Studio Collection[i]. The envelopes typically contain the name of the person who paid for the photos, not necessarily of the individual portrayed in the image. It is vital to analyze the pictures and information to identify the individual therein.[ii] Ultimately, my goal is to reunite the photos with family members who may have never seen the image.

Bernice Thibeau, Student Nurse, circa 1934.

The envelope this negative was in says, “Miss Bernice Thibeau, Queens Hospital #390 – DSCN5010P.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1935 Portland City Directory lists Bernice M Thibeau as a student nurse at 218 State. She resided at 681 Congress St.
  • The 1936 Portland City Directory lists Bernice M Thibeau as a nurse employed at 218 State. She resided at Pine Point (Scarborough).
  • On 1 August 1938, Bernice M Thibeau of Scarborough married Alfred Joseph “Freddie” Menard of Bath.
  • The 1940 US Census found Alfred and the 31-year-old Bernice living in Bath.
  • The 1930 US Census found Bernice living in Scarborough with her parents, William and Celonia Thibeau.

This photo was taken about 1934 when Bernice was about 25 years old.

Ancestry has 30 public trees that refer to Bernice Madeleine Thibeau, born on 1 March 1909. Family Search has profile G7VX-36S for Bernice. I have uploaded two photos of Bernice to her Family Search Memories.

Madolyn Taylor, Student Nurse, circa 1934

This negative envelope says, “Miss Madalyn Taylor, State St. Hospital #262 – DSCN4996.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1936 Portland City Directory lists Madelyn Taylor, a student nurse at 62 State and residing at 52 State.
  •  The 1937 Portland City Directory indicates that nurse Madelyn Taylor married Michael M Bakiewicz.
  • Ancestry Family Trees suggest that this is Madolyn Taylor, born 5 Feb 1914 in Hodgdon, Maine, and married Michael M Bakiewicz on 4 January 1936.

I am sure this photo is of Madolyn Taylor (later Bakiewicz), taken in 1934 when she was about 20.

Ancestry has 22 public trees that refer to Madolyn Taylor. Family Search has profile G4LG-MMT for Madolyn. I uploaded two photos of Madolyn to her Family Search Memories.

Confirmed to be Madolyn.

Pauline Taylor, circa 1934.

This negative envelope says, “Miss Pauline Taylor, 39 Pine St #210.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1935 Portland City Directory lists Pauline E Taylor as a bookkeeper at 98 Exchange, room 12, and living at 39 Pine.
  • The Maine Marriage Index indicates that Pauline E Taylor married Alexander Morris on 23 November 1935.
  • The 1930 US Census suggests that 17-year-old Pauline was Lillian Taylor’s daughter, a servant to George H Truscott.

I believe this to be New Hampshire-born, Pauline E Taylor, later the wife of Alexander C Morris, about 1934 when she was about 21 years old.

Ancestry has two public trees that refer to Pauline Taylor, the wife of Alexander Morris. Family Search does not appear to have a profile for Pauline, so I uploaded a photo of her to Dead Fred and a second photo of her to my Flickr photostream.

This negative envelope says, “Miss Pearl Theriault, 55 Grant St #59.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1935 Portland City Directory lists Pearl J Theriault residing at 55 Grant. Also at 55 Grant are Thomas G & Gertrude M Theriault, Douglass J Theriault, and Hazel M Theriault.
  • The 1930 US Census lists Thomas, Gertrude, Hazel, Douglass, and 15-year-old Pearl Theriault living at 120 Sherman Street.

This photo is of Julia Pearl Theriault, born 24 November 1915 in Canada to Thomas George and Gertrude (Salter) Theriault. She married John Girard Kane on 2 May 1938.

Ancestry has 11 public trees that refer to Julia Pearl Theriault. Family Search does not have a profile for Pearl, so I uploaded a photo of her to Dead Fred. I uploaded a second photo of Pearl to my Flickr Photostream.

Confirmed to be Pearl by a grandniece/grandnephew.

Sabina Terezevich, 1936.

This negative envelope says, “Miss Sabina Terezevich, 92 Salem St (PHS) #1086.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1936 Portland High School yearbook has a photo of Sabina Ann Terezevich, that is clearly the same young woman wearing the same clothing.
  • Sabina’s obituary indicates she died March 16, 2001, in Yarmouth and graduated from Portland High School

This photo package included five photos of Sabina in 1936.

Ancestry has four public trees that refer to Sabina Terezevich. Family Search has profile GJNP-BCT for Sabina. I have uploaded two photos of Sabina to her Family Search Memories. I also uploaded three more pictures of Sabina to my Flickr Photostream

Conclusion

  • I identified all five individuals. Three have Family Search profiles, so I uploaded their images to their Family Search Memories. Two did not have Family Search profiles, so I uploaded their photos to Dead Fred.

This week, for Photo Friday, I identify the people in five more envelopes from the Ethel Wight Studio Collection[i]. The envelope this negative was in says, “E. H. Sylvest__, 26 May St, #74 (Labor Union).”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1940 US Census lists Edward H Sylvester living at 26 May Street. He is a 77-year-old widower born in Maine and lived in the same house in 1935.
  • Family Search Family Trees suggest this is Edward H Sylvester, born in September 1983 and died on April 28, 1945.

I am sure this photo of Edward was taken in 1934, when he was about 71 years old.

Marie Germaine Antoinette Talbot, circa 1935.

This negative envelope says, “Germaine A Talbot, 545 Cumberland #734.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1940 US Census lists the 36-year-old Canadian-born Germaine Talbot as a lodger at 545 Cumberland. She lived in the same house in 1935.
  • The 1935, 1936 lists Germaine Talbot working as a waitress at 266 St John.
  • The 1938, 1939 Portland City Directory lists Germaine as a waitress at Langley’s Union Sta.
  • Maine, U.S., Federal Naturalization Records, 1787-1991 includes a Declaration of Intention by Marie Germaine Antoinette Talbot of 545 Cumberland Ave, Portland. She was born on 12/12/1903. Her application was in 1941, and her application photo appears to be the same woman.

I am confident this is Marie Germaine Antoinette Talbot, the daughter of Wenceslas and Caroline (Veilleux) Talbot. She was born on 12 December 1903 in St. George, Québec. She died on 5 January 1946 after a long illness in Portland, Maine.

Ancestry has four public trees that refer to Germaine. Family Search has profile MW7X-QFS for Germaine. I have uploaded two photos of her to her Family Search Memories. I also uploaded a third photo of her to my Flickr Photostream.

Emily B Taylor, circa 1934.

This negative envelope says, “Miss Emily Taylor, 147 Spring St #154 (℅ Smith).”

What I learned while researching this individual.

  • The 1934 and 1935 Portland City Directories list Emily B Taylor living at 147 Spring. Emily is a demonstrator at 142 High.
  • The 1936 and 1937 Portland City Directory list Emily living at 84 Carleton, apt 4, but or working at 142 High, rm 415. The business in rm 415 is the Bonat Method of Permanent Waving.
  • Maine Birth Records list an Emily Burnes Taylor, born 18 Dec 1907 in Oakland, Kennebec County, Maine. She is the daughter of Russell and Carrie (Burness) Taylor. She married Frank Joseph Schellace in 1942.

I am not 100% confident this photo is of Emily Burnes Taylor. I would like to have found some evidence that the Emily B Taylor, who lived in Portland from 1934 to 1937, is the same Emily B Taylor who married Frank Schellace or is the same Emily who was born in Oakland, Maine.

As such, I identify the individual in these photos as Emily B Taylor, who lived in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, from 1934 to 1937. I have a photo of Emily to Dead Fred and a second photo of her to my Flickr photostream.

Helen Talbot, circa 1935.

This negative envelope says, “Miss Helen Talbot, 25 South St #600.”

What I learned while researching Helen Talbot.

  • The 1935 Portland City Directory does not list a Miss Helen Talbot. Kenneth J Russell lives at 25 Spring St.
  • There was a Helen Talbot who married Lloyd Parker on 21 September 1935. Both were 24 years old and lived in Portland. Helen’s parents were Thomas and Alice Mae (Barry) Talbot, also of Portland.
  • The 1940 US Census places Helen R Parker with her husband, Lloyd, living at 18 Alder Street. With them is Helen’s sister, Marian Talbot.

Ancestry has 23 public trees that refer to Helen Talbot, the wife of Lloyd Parker. I would like to find something that ties Helen (Talbot) Parker to 25 Spring Street or to Kenneth Russell. Because I haven’t found such a link, so I only identify the person in this photo as Miss Helen Talbot, who lived in Portland, Maine, in 1935. I uploaded a photo of Helen to Dead Fred.

Mary Sturgis, circa 1934.

This negative envelope says, “Miss Mary Sturgis, 6 Cumberland Ave #206.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1935 Portland City Directory lists Mary H Sturgis living at 6 Cumberland. Also, at 6 Cumberland lived George F Sturgis, his wife Margaret, and Eleanor F Sturgis.
  • The 1930 US Census lists George and Margaret Sturgis living at 6 Cumberland with their two daughters, Mary & Eleanor. Mary is 15 years old. 

I am confident this is a photo of Mary Hudson Sturgis, born on 15 September 1914.

Ancestry has 21 public trees that refer to Mary Sturgis; Family Search has profile GMLB-41J for her. I uploaded a photo of Mary to her Family Search Memories.

Confirmed to be Mary Sturgis by a great-granddaughter.

Conclusion

I identified three people with Family Search profiles and uploaded their images to their Family Search Memories. Two people I identified did not have Family Search profiles, so I uploaded their photos to Dead Fred.

The envelope this negative was in says, “Miss Eleanor Sturgis, 3 Cumberland Ave #218.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1934 Portland High School Yearbook has a photo of Eleanor Frances Sturgis that is clearly of the same young woman wearing the same dress.
  • The 1930 US Census lists Eleanor F Sturgis, age 13, living with her parents, George S and Margaret H Sturgis.

I am confident this photo is of Eleanor Frances Sturgis (1916-2014), the daughter of George F & Margaret McHardy (Hudson) Sturgis, taken in 1934 as part of her school photos.

Ancestry has 16 public trees that refer to Eleanor. Family Search does not appear to have a profile for Eleanor, the daughter of George Sturgis. I uploaded a photo of Eleanor Frances Sturgis to Dead Fred. I have also uploaded three additional photos of her to my Flickr photostream.

Jessie Stover of Pownal – 1934

This negative envelope says, “Miss Jessie Stover, 30 Caldwell St #118.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1934 Portland City Directory lists Jessie E Stover, a nurse working and residing at 30 Caldwell.
  • The 1930 US Census lists the 20-year-old Jessie E Stover as a Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary student nurse. Jessie and her parents were all born in Maine.
  • Ancestry Public Trees suggest this is Jessie Elizabeth Stover, daughter of Oliver Otis and Vashti Elizabeth (Gosnell) Stover. Jessie appears to be in the 1930 US Census twice, once at the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary in Portland and again with her parents in Pownal.

I am confident this 1934 photo is of Jessie Stover.

Ancestry has 16 public trees that refer to Jessie Elizabeth Stover, born on 24 Sep 1909 in Pownal, Cumberland County, Maine, and Family Search has profile G688-V1F for Jessie. I uploaded a photo of Jessie to her Family Search Memories. I also uploaded five additional photos of Jessie to my Flickr Photostream.

George Sturgis, 1934.

This negative envelope says, “Mr. Geo Sturgis, #6 Morning St #13.”

What I learned while researching George Sturgis.

  • The 1933 Portland City directory lists three people named George Sturgis.
    • George B (and Alice T) living at 103 Beacon.
    • George F (and Margaret H) living at 6 Cumberland.
    • George W (and Ida T) living at 288 State, apt 7.
  • The 1934 and 1935 Portland City Directories list George F and George W living at the same addresses as they did in 1933. George B is no longer listed.
  • The 1935 Portland City Directory lists
    • George F and Margaret H, living at 6 Cumberland
    • George W, living at 288 State, apt 7 with his wife Ida T. The addresses section of the directory does not list 6 Morning.
  • The 1930 US Census lists three people named George Sturgis living in Portland.
    • George S Sturgis, age 46, wife, Margaret, living at 6 Cumberland.
    • George W Sturgis, age 65, wife Ida T, living at 485 Cumberland.
    • Georgie A Sturgis, age 60 (a female), living at 285 Woodfords
  • The individual in the photo appears to be in his 50s, so it can’t be George W leaving George B and George F as potential candidates.
  • My review of Google Maps suggests 6 Morning Street would be a side entrance into the house at 64 Eastern Promenade. A review of individuals who lived at 64 Eastern Promenade during the 1930s revealed no potential candidates.

I have been unable to determine the man’s identity in this photo. Based upon the photo negative envelope, I believe his name is George Sturgis, who was probably in his 50s during 1934.

I have uploaded a photo of George to Dead Fred. I have one more photo (a profile) available in the collection I can share with family members.

Mark Slotsky – Circa 1934.

This negative envelope says, “Mr. Mark Slotsky, 83½ Oxford St #302.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1930 US Census lists 24-year-old Mark Slotsky living at 83½ Oxford St. He is the son of Reuben and Fannie Slotsky.

I am sure this photo is of Mark Slotsky, about 1934, when he was about 28.

Ancestry has three public trees that refer to Mark Slotsky (1905-1979). Family Search has profile GZBY-4W4 for Mark. I have uploaded a photo of Mark to his Family Search Memories.

Confirmed to be Mark Slotsky by a nephew.

Alden Nathanael Street, circa 1935 (age 8)

This negative envelope says, “Mrs. N. Strut, 117 Montrose Ave #313.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1934 Portland City Directory lists Nathaniel and Margaret Street living at 117 Montrose Av.
  • The 1940 US Census lists Nathaniel and Margaret Street living In Falmouth; however, it indicates they lived in Portland in 1935. Living with them is his 12-year-old son Alden and three daughters.
  • In Maine, U.S., Federal Naturalization Records, 1787-1991, Nathanael Street reports his son, Alden Nathanael, was born 30 Dec 1927.

I believe this photo is of Alden Nathanael Street, taken about 1935 when Alden was about eight years old.

I have not found Alden in Ancestry trees. However, I have found his father, Nathanial Street, in 27 public Ancestry trees. Likewise, Family Search does not appear to have a profile for Alden Nathanael Street either. As such, I uploaded his photo to Dead Fred.

Conclusion

I identified all five individuals. Two have Family Search profiles, so I uploaded their images to their Family Search Memories. Two others did not have Family Search profiles, so I uploaded their photos to Dead Fred. Finally, I could not identify one individual other than the name on the envelope. I also uploaded his photo to Dead Fred.

Ancestor Sketch – Lars Mattson (b. 1859)

When Lars Mattson was born in 1859 in Järna, Dalarna, Sweden, his father, Lars, was 35 and his mother, Margareta, was 28. He married Christine Ericson on February 4, 1881. They had 13 children in 20 years. He died on October 13, 1926, in French Lake, Minnesota, at 67, and was buried in French Lake.

Lars Mattson is found in 68 Ancestry Public Trees and is Family Search profile LDQL-2YD.

  • Grandfather: MK-04 – Edward “Eddie” William Mattson [aka Matson] (1898-1977)
  • 1st Great-grandfather: MK-08 – Lars Mattson (1859-1926)
  • 2nd Great-grandfather: MK-16 – Lars Mattison (1925-1899)
  • 3rd Great-grandfather: MK-32 – Mats Olsson (___-___)

As is often the case, names are different in different records. In the case of Lars, he is found as Lars Matson, Lars Mattison, Lars Mattsen, and even mistranscribed as Lais Mattson. I’ve settled on Lars Mattson as the preferred name because that is the name entered on his burial memorial and marker. Additionally, more records use that name than the other names.

Birth

Lars was born on 16 or 17 December 1859 in Järna, Kopparberg, Sweden. A great Swedish famine during 1867-1869 led to the migration of 60,000 Swedes[i]. Lars’ parents were among those to emigrate to the United States.

Childhood

1870

His family apparently went directly to French Lake, Wright County, Minnesota, about 1869 and appeared in the 1870 US Census there. The household consisted of Lars; his parents, Lars and “Gretta;” and a brother, Andrew. They lived in the same house as Lars Hoogland, his wife, and his daughter.

1880

I have not been successful in finding Lars in the 1880 Census.

Marriage

Lars married Christine Ericson in 1881. Some researchers suggest they married in Albion, Maine. I have not found the source document for that assertation. I’d love to see it. I’ve seen nothing in Lars’ life indicating he went to Maine. With 20 different places named Albion in the United States, I suspect another Albion is more likely[ii].

The baby died on the same day as Rudolph was born. So, it is quite possible that Rudolph and the unnamed baby were twins and the unnamed child died at birth.  

Adulthood

Mattson Family Memorial

The 1885 Minnesota Census shows Lars and his wife, “Stina,” living next door to his parents. With him are his two oldest children, August and “Lina.” Lars was a farmer and owned his farm. In 1909 he was a trustee when the Swedish Free Church of North Crow River was incorporated. Although he and Christine lived in French Lake Township, their mailing address was Route 3, Box 41, Cokato, Minn.

Death & Burial

Lars lived in French Lake until his death on 13 October 1926. He was buried at the North Crow River Free Cemetery, now the Elim Birch Lake Cemetery. Lars, his wife Christine, and six of his 13 children are buried in this small (51 memorials) cemetery.

  • Research the exact date and place of Lars’ immigration/arrival.

Photo Friday – Stelle, Stevens & Stinson

This week, for Photo Friday, I identify the people in five more envelopes from the Ethel Wight Studio Collection[i]. The envelopes typically contain the name of the person who paid for the photos, not necessarily of the individual portrayed in the image. It is vital to analyze the pictures and information to identify the individual therein.[ii] Ultimately, my goal is to reunite the photos with family members who may have never seen the image.

Gladys Stinson (née Watkins) (later Turner), circa 1934.

The envelope this negative was in says, “Miss Gladys Stinson, 64 Bramhall St., #271.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1933 Portland City Directory lists Mrs. Gladys D Stinson, a clerk at 532 Congress, residing at 64 Bramhall. [Do not confuse with Gladys P Stinson, residing at 440 Cottage in South Portland.]
  • The 1935 Portland City Directory lists Mrs. Gladys L Stinson, a clerk at 532 Congress and residing at 359 Congress. [Do not confuse with Gladys P Stinson, residing at 40 Alder, apt 5K.
  • The 1936 Portland City Directory only lists Gladys P Stinson.
  • Maine, U.S. Marriage Index, 1892-1996 lists Gladys I Stinson marrying J. S. Turner on 9 June 1935.
  • The Portland Press Herald, 9 June 1935, Page 20, ran an article showing Miss Gladys I Stinson of 359 Congress would become the bride of J Stanton Turner of 32 Bolton Street. Miss Stinson is a native of London, England. There is a photo of the bride in the newspaper, and it is clearly the same woman as in this photo.
  • The Portland Evening Express, dated 31 October 1934, on page 2, reported the following: “Gladys I Stinson of Portland was divorced from Carl F. Stinson, of South Portland, with custody of a child.”
  • The 1940 US Census reported that J. Stanton and Gladys Turner lived in Portland. Gladys was born c. 1906 in England and had a 10-year-old son. Her mother was Hilda E Watkins, who also lived in the household.

I am quite sure this is a photo of Gladys Irene Stinson (née Watkins) (Later Turner) about 1934. Gladys was born on 7 April 1906 in England.

Ancestry has 11 public trees that refer to Gladys, and Family Search has profile G77C-5YB for her. I have uploaded a photo of Gladys to her Family Search Memories.

Miss Marie Stevens, Student Nurse at St. Barnabas Hospital, circa 1935.

This negative envelope says, “Miss Marie Stevens, St. Barnabas Hospital #678.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1934 Deering High School yearbook shows Marie E Stevens. Her senior photo is clearly of the same young girl as this photo portrays. Marie was a member of the Junior Red Cross all four years.
  • The 1930 US Census identifies Marie E Stevens, the 13-year-old daughter of Perley E and Grace E Stevens. They lived at 110 Brentwood, which is less than a mile from St. Barnabas Hospital.

I am confident this photo is of Marie E Stevens, daughter of Perley and Grace Stevens, taken about 1935.

Ancestry has six public trees that refer to Marie; Family Search has profile L1TY-51V for Marie E Stevens. I have uploaded a photo of her to her Family Search Memories.

This negative envelope says, “Miss Marjorie Stevens, St. Barnabas Hospital #677.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1930 US Census lists Marjorie E K Stevens as the 13-year-old Maine-born granddaughter of Julia M Knapp living at 110 Woodfords Street, which was about 1/3 of a mile from St. Barnabas Hospital.
  • The 1933 Dearing High School Yearbook photo clearly shows that this is the same young woman, Marjorie Stevens, as in this 1835 photo.

I am confident this is a photo of Marjorie Elaine Stevens, born on 17 September 1916 to Harry and Ella Mae (Knapp) Stevens.

Ancestry has 13 public trees that refer to Marjorie; Family Search has profile 94YM-MGV for her. I have uploaded a photo of Marjorie to her Family Search Memories.

Kathryn Rose Stelle (née Smith), circa 1934.

This negative envelope says, “Mrs. Kathryn Stelle, Myles Standish Apt – Shefly St, apt 48 #175.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • The 1935 Portland City Directory lists Kathryn R Stelle living at 11 Shepley, Apt 48. She is the wife of Nelson Stelle.
  • The 1940 US Census lists Nelson and his 72-year-old wife, Katheryn R Stelle, living in Old Orchard Beach. Both were born in New York.
  • Ancestry Family Trees suggest this is Kathryn Rose Stelle (née Smith), born about 1868 in New York and lived in Old Orchard Beach with her husband Nelson in 1940.

Ancestry has one public tree that refers to Kathryn Rose Smith (later Stelle). Family Search does not appear to have a profile for Kathryn. I uploaded a photo of Kathryn to Dead Fred. I uploaded a second photo of Kathryn to my Flickr photostream.

William & Evelyn Stevens, circa 1935 (ages 4 & 1).

This negative envelope says, “Mrs. A. C. Stevens, 80 Cumberland Ave #721.”

Why I believe this to be these individuals.

  • The 1935 Portland City Directory does not list an A. C. Stevens. However, it does list a William B Stevens living at 80 Cumberland Ave. William B Stevens’ wife is identified as Annie C.
  • The 1940 US Census lists William B and Annie C Stevens living at 23 Washington Ave. With them is their eight-year-old son, William, and five-year-old daughter, Evelyn.
  • Ancestry Family Trees suggest William was born on 11 June 1931, in Portland, Maine; Evelyn was born on 16 Jun 1934, also in Portland.

This photo was taken about 1935 when William was about four and Evelyn Ann was about one.

William Arthur Stevens (1931-2005) is found in six Ancestry public trees, and Evelyn Ann Stevens (1934-2008) is also in six Ancestry public trees. Family Search does not appear to have a profile for either, so I uploaded this photo of them to Dead Fred.

Conclusion

  • I identified all six individuals. Three have Family Search profiles, so I uploaded their images to their Family Search Memories. Three did not have Family Search profiles, so I uploaded their photos to Dead Fred.

I will love to hear your reaction if any of these photos are of your family member. Especially if this photo is of a loved one for whom you hadn’t seen this photograph before.
