Hart, La Folley, & Shaw

It is a good week for my Photo Identification Project. I looked at three small photos—two women and a child. I was able to identify one of the women and the child.

Nina Hart

Nina Hart (Sara Hart is her mother) The back of the photo says, “Nina Hart (Sarah Hart is her mother).”

The 1900 Census indicates there were two Nina Hart’s in in Maine in 1900.

  • One was born in August 1880 and was married to Starling Hart in 1900. The photo is clearly of a child and can’t be Mrs. Hart.
  • The other was born in January 1891. She was a boarder living with Mary J. Hart (head) in St. George Town, Knox County, Maine.

The 1910 Census indicates that Nina Hart, born in 1891, was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Hart and lived in St. George, Knox County, Maine.

The 1920 Census confirms Nina Hart living with Thomas & Sarah Hart in South Thomaston, Knox County, Maine. (Note: South Thomaston is about 5 miles from St. George.)

There are no other Nina Hart’s in Maine enumerated in the 1900 to 1930 censuses and the photo appears to be from that era.

As such, I believe this Nina Hart is the daughter of Thomas F. and  and Sarah E (Murphy) Hart and was born 15 December 1890.

I estimate the girl in this photo is about 11 years old, making the photo from circa 1901.

Mrs. La Folley

Mrs. La Folley - RockportThe back of the photo says, “Mrs. La Folley – Rockport.” Although no photographic studio is identified, the print is a mini-cabinet card. That type of card was typically produced from 1880 to 1900.

The 1900 Census indicates that a Eugenia La Folly lived in Rockport Town, Knox County, Maine. She lived with her 8-year-old son, Theodore B. La Folley. Eugenia was born in April 1867 and was married; however, her husband was not enumerated on the same page.

Theodore B. La Folley was born in Rockport and his mother was Eugenie L. Thorndike.

There were no other Mrs. Folley’s in the area during the late 1800s when miniature cabinet cards were produced.

As such, I believe this to be Eugenie L. (Thorndike) Folley (also known as Linda Eugenia Thorndike) born 12 April 1866 in Rockport, Knox County, Maine to Robert Cothell and Joanna Carolina (Annis) Thorndike. She was the wife of Ralph Morse LaFolley and mother of Theodore Benner La Folley.

Laura Shaw

Laura Shaw

The back of the photo says, “Laura Shaw.” This photo appears to be a copy on regular paper and is not on photo stock. There is no studio identification.

There are so many Laura Shaw’s in Maine that without additional information it will be impossible to determine which Laura Shaw this is. A quick review of “Laura Shaw” in the Social Security Death Index revealed the at least six “Laura Shaw’s” that would be candidates. Laura Shaw born:

  • 1896, died 1974, Millinocket, Penobscot County
  • 1898, died 1983
  • 1898, died 1995 in Cumberland County
  • 1899, died 1966 in Presque Isle, Aroostook County
  • 1901, died 1987 in South Paris, Oxford County
  • 1902, died 1980

For this week’s Treasure Chest Tuesday, I’m looking at five clippings from three pages of the Donna Darling Collection that all relate to Donna’s playing at the Pantheon Theatre in Vincennes, Indiana.

Luckily, one of the clippings has a newspaper title and date with it. With that information, I was able to find the exact newspaper online at the Knox County Public Library’s Advantage Preservation site.

The article was clipped from the Vincennes, (Ind.) Morning Commercial dated April 28, 1925.

BATHING GIRLS MAKE BIG SHOW

“Just hang your clothes upon a limb, but don’t go near the water.” This winding-up or finish of a poem perhaps fitted through the minds of more than one person who witnessed Donna Darling and her Bathing Girl Revue at the Pantheon theatre last night. The bathing beach scenes were excellent—all except the bathing beach.

There were girls, with their latest creation of bathing suits gorgeous, but conspicuous in their scantiness. There were lifeguards—two of them—but the beauty of the bathing girls, it must be confessed, distracted from the attention given the guards.

The show opened with a display of bathing suits of the days of 1860, in the days when modesty was more prevalent than in 1925. Then came the bathing girls of 1890, a little more daring in the style of their bathing suits; the girls of 1900, still more daring and finally, a modern girl, strutting proudly in the latest fashion creation in bathing suits.

In lieu of water in which to swim the girls displayed some rare talent at dancing. The Honolulu bathing girl, with her abbreviated suit consisting principally of seaweeds, and her exceptional ability at dancing, drew hearty applause. The Dutch bathing girl also proved a good dancer and was generously applauded. Each number pleased the audience, a fact evidenced by the hearty applause.

The feature picture, “Cheaper to Marry,” with Lewis Stone, Conrad Nagel, Marguerite De LaMotte and other stars, was an added feature to one of the best bills that has been presented at the Pantheon for some time. The show will be given tonight and tomorrow….

Along with the article, there is a clipping that came from the April 29th newspaper. It showed Donna and her Bathing Girl Revue. Through the articles and advertisements in the paper that I found I learned of a new venue for Donna

Mannin in Carter County – 1880 Census

Photo of Don Taylor with cat Nasi.One of my truly difficult lines to follow is my 2nd great-grandmother, Elisa Jane [or Lisa J.] (Fannin) Mannin. Several other researcher’s trees suggest her maiden surname was “Mannin” and was probably a cousin of John William Mannin. I have only discovered her named in one or two documents.

In any event, I want to understand the Mannin families of Carter County, Kentucky in the mid to late 1800s. I have very little direct evidence regarding the Mannin family and how various relations exist. So, if I start with the 1880 Census, which describes relationships, I should be able to track the families back in time.

1880 Census

A search for “Mannin” in Carter County, Kentucky yielded six families who were enumerated in the county in 1880. All six were in Precinct 4 and all were in Enumeration District 15, suggesting they all lived nearby each other. They were:

Enoch Mannin – Sheet 547D – Previously incorporated in my tree.

      • Manerva, wife – Age 59.

Isaac Mannin – Sheet 547D – Apparently the 2nd head of household in the same dwelling – Previously incorporated.

William C Mannin – Sheet 546A – New Family for me.  I entered Names, relationships, year and place of birth and residence during the 1880 Census based upon this record.

      • Montaville Mannin  Son – Age 9
      • Silas Mannin               Son – Age 8

All of the individuals were born in Kentucky except for Tubal’s wife, Elizabeth [Mannin].

Conclusion

Six families and 37 individuals with the Mannin surname lived, according to the 1880 Census, in Carter County in 1880. Note: John William Mannin(g) and his wife, Lisa, appear to be living in adjoining Rowan County, Kentucky during the 1880 Census.

Four Men & a Boy

Very good week for my Photo Identification Project. three individuals were identified and one other I have a name for but I can’t confirm which of two individuals it is.

Ralph Marr Bragdon

The back of the photo says, “Ralph Marr Bragdon married Hazel Clynda Gardner – Feb 11, 1920.”  The photo is by The Pike Studio, Westbrook Maine and says “W. H. S. Class 1915.”

I believe this to be Ralph Bragdon, son of George and Minnie (Marr), Bragdon married Hazel Gardner on 11 February 1920 in Westbrook, Cumberland, Maine. Family Search ID LYRK-Y47: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/memories/LYRK-Y47

Harold Bragdon

The back of the photo says, “Harold Bragdon.” The photo is by “Fenley Studio – Walter Fenley – Guy Kendall, Portland, Maine.”

There is also a second photo slipped inside of the photo pages which says “Harold Bragdon, 319 Warren Ave, Cumberland Mills, Me.” There is no photographer information on the second photo.

Ralph Bragdon (above) had a younger brother Harold. These photos appear to be of Ralph’s younger brother. The earlier photo probably about 1910. The older one of Harold is probably when he was 18 or so, 1918. Family Search ID LYRK-Y47: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LRL2-DX8

Paul Brackett

The back of the photo says, “Paul Brackett – Graduation 1935,” The photo is by “Roger Paul Jordan, Portland.”

There was a Paul Brackett, son of Ernest and Eva Brackett who was born in South Portland on 17 Jan 1915. This appears to be him. Family Search ID GMR3-43Y: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GMR3-43Y

John Shaw

The pack of the photo says, “Very Truly Yours, John Shaw.” In a different pen and hand it reads “January 5th, 1906.” The photo is by “The Hatch Studio – Chas. R. Higgins,  Prop., Bath, Maine.”

A review of the Census records between 1900 and 1910 resulted in two results.

  • John Oakman Shaw – b. Dec 1838 or 1839, d. 1906. Wife Mary, Lived in Bath in 1900                 Age 69 – Too old to be the person in this photo.
  • John Shaw – b. October 1872 – Wife Harriet, lived in Bath in 1900 & 1910 – Age 34 – Candidate.

There were several other John Shaws in Maine during 1906 but none in Sagadahoc County. There was a John E. Shaw, born 1886 who lived in Lowell, Penobscot, Maine in 1910. And there was a John Shaw, born 1876 who lived in Lewiston, Androscoggin county, Maine in 1910. Lewiston is only about 25 miles from Bath, so this photo could potentially be him.

I believe this is John Shaw, born 1872 and who lived in Bath during the 1900 and 1910 Censuses, I there is a possibility the individual in the photo could be one of the others.
