Happy Birthday rememberance of my grandmother, Madonna “Donna” Mae Montran (1893–1976). She lived a complex and fascinating life that extended far beyond her vaudeville years. Born in Albion, Michigan, she married several times, later settled in Michigan and Minnesota, and ultimately donated her body to science. Donna at the Colonial Theater, Lancaster, PA, – Sept. 15-17, 1919
Newspaper ads from the Lancaster newspapers confirm that Donna appeared at the Colonial Theatre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on September 15–17, 1919. Her act shared the bill with several touring vaudeville performers and a Pathe News comedy film. This discovery adds another verifiable stop in Donna’s 1919 performance schedule and deepens the history of her early career. Continue reading

Donna in Salt Lake City, November 24th & 25th, 1919 at the Salt Lake Theater.
In 1919, the “Chin Chin” company performed a two-night show at the Salt Lake Theater, promoted with articles and ads in the Salt Lake Telegram and Herald. Featuring a large cast including Donna Montran, the musical comedy was well-received, praised for its freshness and costumes. The historic Salt Lake Theater, built in 1861 and accommodating 1,500, was torn down in 1928 and replaced by a building with a commemorative plaque. Continue reading
