In various documents, he appears as Frank, Franc, and Francis. In several documents, his surname is transcribed as Halero. He had six siblings: James, Adeline, John, Catherine, Amanda7, and Arina7. He died on 10 Dec 19241,5 in Vaudreuil, Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Quebec, Canada1,5 (Hudson1,5). When he was 25, he married Selina Harriett Park8,2,9, daughter of James Park and Mary Maura McLeon, on 17 Dec 18679 in Vaudreuil, Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Quebec, Canada9. When he was 44, he married Annie E Beswarick10,3, about 188710

He considered that he was of Scotch origin15. (His grandfather came over from Scotland.)

1871 Canada Census – He was counted in the census on 02 Apr 18716 in Vaudreuil, Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Quebec, Canada6 (Captain, Angelican6). He was employed as a Captain4 in 18814 in Vaudreuil, Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Quebec, Canada4. He was affiliated with the Church of England4,10,12 religion between 1881-19014,10,12 in Quebec, Canada4,10,12.

Capt. William Francis Halcro was born, married twice, had 13 children, died and was buried all in Vaudreuil, Quebec, Canada.  He worked as a captain of a tugboat and was a justice of the peace. There is a photo of his marker at Find-a-Grave. Mary Elizabeth (Manning) Brown’s Mother – Part 3 of 6

Photo of Don Taylor with cat Nasi.I previously concluded that Sarah Jane Garvin could not be my 2nd great-grandmother. (See: Could it be Sarah Jane Garvin – Part 2.) However, other researchers believe Mary Elizabeth Mannin(g)[i] Brown mother is one of four different names.

    • Mary A. [Mannin] (1851-1877)
    • Nelly Nellie Burton (1863-1949)
    • Lisa J. Mannin (1861-___)
    • Eliza Jane Fannin (1861-1882)

In Part 3 of this series, I’ll look at the evidence that Mary E Mannin’s mother was Mary A.

One hundred thirty-one public trees refer to Mary Elizabeth Manning, who married Arthur Durwood Brown. Three trees suggest her mother is Mary A. Mannin (1851-1877); two others suggest Mary A. Mullins (1851-1885).

1880 Census – Finds James Mannin, his wife Mary A, and two children, four-year-old Mary E and one-year-old Floyd living in Hamptons Mill, Morgan County, Kentucky. There is no evidence that James is John William “Joe” Mannin.

1900 Census – Starting in the 1900 Census and records after that, Mary Elizabeth’s husband and children are consistent with my record sources. Only ascribing the 1880 census and the mother “Mary A” appears to be inconsistent with my records.

One tree that suggests Mary A. Mullins is Mary’s mother also provides a different spouse, children, and death inconsistent with the other known Mary Elizabeth (Manning) Brown’s life. So, this tree uses the same 1880 Census record as above but ascribes the record to a different, and likely correct, Mary E Manning, not my great-grandmother.

Next, I’ll consider Nellie Burton as a candidate to be Mary Elizabeth Manning’s mother.

Conclusion

I am confident that Mary A Manning is not my 2nd great-grandmother. The cross-over is caused by several people linking a different Mary E Manning to my Mary Elizabeth Manning in the 1880 Census.

Ethel Wight Collection – Part 75

Photo of Don Taylor with cat Nasi.This week, for Photo Friday, I identify the people in five more envelopes from the Ethel Wight Studio Collection[i]. The envelopes contain the names who paid for the photos, not necessarily of the individual portrayed in the image. As such, it is vital to analyze the pictures and information to identify the individual therein.[ii] My goal is to reunite the photos with family members who may have never seen the image.

The envelope this negative was in says, “Miss Annette Laberge, Children’s Hospital #321.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • Annette Marie Laberge, Nurse, circa 1934

    The 1935 Portland City Directory lists Annette Laberge as a student nurse at 231 Woodford (St. Barnabas Hospital) residing at 20 Norwood.

  • The 1938 Portland City Directory lists Annette M Laberge as a nurse working and residing at 15 Parris.
  • There is an Annette M. LaBerge, a registered nurse born in Maine in July 1907, who married Wilfred Laurendeau. Her parents were Emilio and Maria LaBerge.
  • A review of Ancestry public trees suggests this is Annette Marie Laurendeau (NĂ©e Laberge), born 15 July 1907 to Emilio Amos and Maria (Polsson) Laberge.

I believe this to be a photo of Annette Marie Laberge, circa 1934 when she was about 27 years old.

Ancestry has ten public trees that refer to Annette Laberge; Family Search does not appear to have a profile for her. So, I have added her photo to Dead Fred. 

Jeanette M Lapierre, Nurse, circa 1935

This negative envelope says, “Miss Jeanette La Pierre, ME Eye & Ear Infirmary #488.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • Jeanette M Lapierre, Nurse, circa 1935

    The 1935 and 1936 Portland City Directories list Jeanette LaPierre as a student nurse at 79 Bramhall (Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary) residing at 804 Congress.

  • The 1933 Deering High School (Portland, ME) shows a photo of Jeanette M LaPierre, which is clearly the same young woman—estimated birth about 1917.

Sometimes, I’m just so close to finding exactly who a photo is of. In this case, I know the image is of Jeanette M. LaPierre, a student at Deering High School (Portland, ME), suggesting she was born about 1917. She attended nursing school at the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary in Portland from 1935 to 1937. My further attempts to determine her parents, place of birth, or marriage were unsuccessful.

A Jeanette M Lapierre was born on 17 March 1915 in Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts. Her parents were Alfred and Marceline Lapierre. She married Ovida Louis Mercier in about 1933. In 1933 she would have been about 18, possibly the right age to have been a student at Deering High School; however, she is unlikely to have been studying nursing from 1935 to 1937 with her maiden name.

Ancestry has 15 public trees that refer to Jeanette M Lapierre, daughter of Alfred and Marceline (Daviau) LaPierre. However, I am not 100% certain this is the correct person. Anyway, I uploaded this photo of her to Dead Fred. One of her relatives will hopefully be able to identify the young nurse in this photo. If you can, please comment below. 

Leota M Langley, Nurse, circa 1935

This negative envelope says, “Miss Langley, Me General Hospital #962.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • Leota M Langley, Nurse, circa 1935

    1936, 37, and 38 Portland City Directories list Leota Langley as a student nurse at 22 Arsenal (Maine General Hospital).

  • The 1940 US Census lists Leota M Langley, daughter of Alice M Downing, a nurse living in Kennebunk. She was born about 1914 in Massachusetts, and her mother was born in Canada. Leota was living in Portland in 1935.
  • Leota Mary Langley’s 1994 obituary indicates she served as a nurse in World War II and the Korean War and retired as an Army major in the Nurse Corps.

Ancestry has two trees that refer to Leota Langley; Family Search appears to have profile G9N1-8J9 for Leota M Langley, who was in the Kennebunk household of Jere R Downing during the 1930 Census.  So, I  have uploaded two photos of her to her Family Search Memories.

This negative envelope says, “Miss Patrice LaPointe, 8 North St. Portland #1050.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • Elizabeth Patrice La Pointe, circa 1935

    The 1935 Portland City Directory lists Patrice M LaPointe living at 8 North. Also at 8 North is John A and his wife Mary D LaPointe.

  • The 1930 US Census lists 15-year-old Patrica LaPoint living at 8 North Street with her parents, John A and Mary D LaPointe.
  • Maine Birth Records identify Patrice as born on 18 Jan 1915 in Rangeley, Maine. Elizabeth Patrice LaPointe married John B Collins on 26 November 1936 in Portland, ME.

This is a photo of Elizabeth Patrice La Pointe about 1935 when she was 20 years old.

Ancestry has ten public trees that refer to Elizabeth Patrice LaPointe. Family Search has profile LRYD-73Z for Patrice. I uploaded two photos of her to her Family Search Memories. 

Patricia, Constance, Nancy, and Suzanne La Rochelle circa 1935.

This negative envelope says, “Mrs. L B Larochelle, 68 St Lawrence St #1032 – DSCN3908LP.”

Why I believe this to be the individual.

  • Patricia, Constance, Nancy, and Suzanne La Rochelle, circa 1935.

    The 1935 Portland City Directory lists Lorne G and Priscilla LaRochelle living at 68 Lawrence.

  • The 1940 US Census lists Lorne G and A Priscilla Larochelle living at 60 Vincent Street in South Portland. Their four daughters are Patricia, Age 1; Constance, Age 9; Nancy, Age 7; and Suzanne, Age 6.
  • Ancestry Trees suggest the following:
    • Patricia Maude LaRochelle was born on 14 January 1929 in Portland, ME.
    • Constance Meriel LaRochelle, born on 22 September 1930 in Maine.
    • Nancy Doris LaRochelle was born on 14 June 1932 in Maine.
    • Suzanne Hooker LaRochelle was born on 25 February 1934 in Portland, ME.

This is a photo of the four girls in about 1936.

Patricia is found in six Ancestry public trees, Constance is found in eight Ancestry public trees, Nancy is found in 11 Ancestry public trees, and Suzanne is found in eight Ancestry public trees. On Family Search, Patricia is ID G8CV-87P, Constance is ID G83M-MV7, Nancy is ID L1S2-LNJ, and Suzanne is ID G31K-6SY. I uploaded two photos of the girls to FamilySearch and linked the images to each of their Family Search Memories.

Conclusion

  • I fully identified seven of eight individuals. Six of them have Family Search profiles, so I uploaded their images to their Family Search Memories
  • One individual did not have a Family Search profile but did appear in Ancestry trees, so I posted her image to Dead Fred.
  • Finally, one individual I did not fully identify but made a partial identification of her. I uploaded her photo to Dead Fred.

If any of these photos are of your family member, I would love to hear your reaction. Especially if this photo is of a loved one for whom you hadn’t seen this photograph before.

The information found in newspapers often raises more questions and research areas but invariably provides fresh texture to understanding an ancestor’s life.

Today’s article reports an event in the life of my 3rd Great-Grandfather, Stephen Blackhurst.

From the Sheffield and Rotherham Independent newspaper (Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England) dated 20 Nov 1847 is an ad; “Sales by Mr. George Taylor.”

Stephen Blackhurst’s father (Stephen Blackhurst (1777-1847) died the previous March. Stephen and his wife Fanny Taylor immigrated to the United States in 1847-48. So, Stephen was selling his prize gooseberry tree collection in preparation for moving to the States.

Could it be Sarah Jane Garvin? – Part 2

Photo of Don Taylor with cat Nasi.Information about my great-grandmother’s (Mary Elizabeth Mannin(g)[i] Brown) mother has been elusive. I believe her mother was Eliza Jane Fannin (1861-1882). Other researchers have indicated they believe Mary’s mother was Sarah Jane Garvin. Looking at other researchers’ trees, I could not find any record or source that shows Sarah was Mary’s mother (see “Could it be Sarah Jane Garvin – Part 1”). Because of that, I decided to see if I could find any evidence that Mary’s mother was Sarah rather than Eliza.

I began with all forty-some public trees that suggest Sarah as mother and the sources they reference. None of their sources included any documentation that supported that assertion. This article looks at the sources used in public Ancestry trees that refer to Sarah Jane Garvin, wife of John William Mannin(g), having a daughter Mary Elizabeth.

Other than information about her parents, sources from before the marriage of Sarah Jane Garvin and John William “Joe” Mannin are non-contributory. Other sources for Sarah include:

    • 1870 Census – John & Sarah Manning living in Mt. Olivet, Robertson County, Kentucky—John is 24 and Sarah is 27; they have no children.
    • 1880 Census – John and Lisa Mannin living in Pine Grove, Rowan County. John is 34, John’s wife Lisa is 19, and daughter Mary is 2.
    • Kentucky Death Records – Sarah J Garvin, born 1844, died 29 May 1877 in Carter County, KY.

The 1880 Census was taken on 1 June 1880. Sarah died months before Mary was born in April 1878 and couldn’t be her mother.

  • Several researchers provide evidence of John W Mannin and Sarah J Garvin getting married on 30 July 1868.

Conclusion

Sarah Jane Garvin cannot be the Mary Elizabeth Manning. Some researchers have indicated that Mary was born in 1876 rather than 1878. Mary would have been four during the 1880 Census if this were the case. Additionally, Mary’s sister Phoebe, born in 1881, could not be a full sister if Sarah was their mother.

I just can’t see how Sarah Jane Garvin could be the mother of Mary Elizabeth Mannin. If anyone has evidence indicating how this relationship could be true, I’d love to hear about it. Please comment below.[ii]

Other potential mothers for Mary Elizabeth Mannin include:

    • Mary A. [Mannin] (1851-1877)
    • Nelly Nellie Burton (1863-1949)
    • Lisa J. Mannin (1861-___)
    • Eliza Jane Fannin (1861-1882)

I’ll look at evidence/sources for Mary A. [Mannin] being Mary E’s mother next. Sometime in the future I’ll also briefly look at the DNA relationships and see if that can provide any illumination into Mary’s parentage.
